What adaptogen means

The term describes a substance that helps the body maintain balance under stress rather than pushing it in one direction. Ashwagandha is the most studied one.

The cortisol evidence

Several controlled trials show reductions in serum cortisol and in self-reported stress scores over eight to twelve weeks. The effect sizes are modest but consistent, which is unusual in this field.

Dose and extract type

Most positive trials used a standardised root extract at 300 to 600 mg daily. Whole-herb powder at the same weight is not equivalent — check for a standardised extract.

It is not fast

Adaptogens work cumulatively. Two to four weeks before anything is noticeable, eight to twelve for the full effect seen in trials.

Who should avoid it

Anyone pregnant, anyone with hyperthyroidism, and anyone on thyroid or immunosuppressant medication. Ashwagandha is active, which is exactly why it can interact.
